1. Avoid Water at All Costs ☔❌

This is rule
number one, etched into every skater’s brain. Water is the arch-nemesis of a maple skateboard deck.

  • Why it’s Bad: Water seeps into the wood plies, weakening the glue and causing the wood to
    swell, warp, and lose its pop. It can also rust your hardware and seize your bearings.
  • What to Do:
  • Never skate in the rain or on wet ground. Seriously, don’t
    do it.
  • If your board gets wet accidentally, wipe it down immediately with a dry cloth and let it air dry completely in a well-ventilated area. Do not use heat, as this can also cause warping
    .

2. Mind Your Landings (As Much As Possible) 🦵🎯

We know, easier said than done! But how you land tricks significantly impacts your deck’s longevity.

  • Avoid Landing on the Tail
    /Nose:     Repeatedly landing directly on the very tip of your tail or nose will cause razor tail/nose and accelerate chipping. Try to land with your feet over the truck bolts.
  • Even Foot Placement: Distribute your
    weight evenly across the board when landing to prevent excessive stress on one area, which can lead to pressure cracks.
  • Wax Ledges & Rails: When grinding or sliding, a little wax on the obstacle (not your board!) can
    reduce friction and prevent excessive wear on your deck’s bottom ply.

3. Protect Your Edges: Shoe Goo is Your Friend đź©ą

Chipping on the nose and tail is inevitable, but you can slow it down

  • Shoe Goo/Epoxy: Apply a thin layer of Shoe Goo or a similar flexible epoxy to the very edge of your nose and tail. Let it dry completely. This creates a protective barrier against impact. Re

  • Grip Tape Overhang: When applying new grip tape, leave a tiny bit of overhang (1/8 inch or so) around the edges. When you trim it, sand the edges down at
    a slight angle. This helps seal the plies and prevent premature chipping.

Regular Checks: Periodically check your truck bolts and kingpin nuts. Make sure they are snug, but don’t overtighten them, as this can cause stress cracks around the bolt holes.

    or in extremely cold conditions, as temperature fluctuations can affect the wood and glue.
